Best of all, the Collie is very good with children, although they are sometimes too active for small children.

They are also dogs that enjoy spending time together with their family. In general, the male Collie dog tends to be much more outgoing than the females.

When considering buying a Bearded Collie, it is a medium sized dog weighing approximately 20 to 24 kilograms. It has a strong, lean body with straight front legs and muscular hindquarters.

History of the Bearded Collie

Most experts agree that the Bearded Collie is a descendant of the Magyar Komondor (Polar Shepherd of the plains) of Central Europe. Documents confirm that two Polish Shepherd dogs from the plains were brought to Scotland by Polish traders in 1514.

Evidence of the breed is present in the early 1800’s in a published written description. A 1771 portrait of the Duke of Buccleuch includes one of the earliest known images of a Bearder Collie.

Bearded Collie caracteristicas

The breed was able to guard sheep and drive cattle for many miles over the cold, rough terrain of Scotland. The Bearded became popular as a show dog after the Victorian era.

Initially there were two types of Collie: one that had a brown and white, slightly wavy coat, and the grey and white Bearded Collie. The two types were crossed and became one breed.

The Bearded Collie was heading towards extinction in the early 20th century when Mrs. G.O. Willison, who owned Bothkennar Kennels, began breeding the Bearded Collie puppy as a show dog. For this reason Mrs. Willison is considered to have saved the breed.

The Bearded Collie Club was also started in Great Britain in 1955. In the late 1950s, the dog was brought to America and the American Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1977. Today, the Bearded Collie is popular as a show dog and competes in herding trials.

Appearance of the Bearded Collie Dog Breed

The Bearded Collie’s most notable appearance characteristics are that it has a fair amount of hair on the front and hind legs covering its powerful muscular thighs. The legs of the breed are oval in shape with pads that have significant padding and arched toes.

The dog’s head is in proportion to the rest of his body with a square shaped nose. Bearded Collie puppies have large eyes that are the same shade as the coat, and arched eyebrows help this breed appear affectionate.

Their medium-sized ears hang loosely and are covered with long hair. Strong teeth come together in a scissor bite. Bearded Collies usually have a tail that is covered with hair, which is set low on their body, curving upwards at the end and often raised when active.

Bearded Collie Personality

All Bearded Collies kennel Spain indicate that Collies are intelligent, athletic, playful and energetic dogs, as well as obedient. The breed has a tendency to herd and in most cases gets along well with other domestic pets.

They are active dogs and require daily exercise, so long walks and intensive play should be included. An average sized yard is recommended so that a dog of this breed can run and play regularly on a lead.

As Bearded Collies enjoy spending time with their family, they should not be left alone for long periods of time with nothing to do and should be allowed in the house to spend time with their family.

Care of the Bearded Collie breed

The Bearded Collie sheds regularly. Daily brushing will help reduce shedding and help keep the coat clean and soft. Brushing is also important to prevent a Bearded Collie’s hair from tangling. If you notice too much shedding, you will want to brush even more before the amount of hair throughout your home becomes overwhelming.

It is recommended that a Collie’s nails be trimmed regularly so that they do not grow too long and start to break. Checking their ears regularly is important to ensure that wax and dirt do not build up and cause infection.

What is it like to live with a Bearded Collie?

Bearded Collies can be picky eaters, which is surprising for such active dogs. A good balanced diet is ideal, however, too many treats can lead to obesity even in these active dogs.

The Bearded requires a good amount of exercise, with a couple of daily walks and a good run, play or training session recommended as well. This breed of dog is quite hardy and often lives to be 14 or 15 years old.

As with most herding breeds, the Bearded Collie thrives on human companionship and needs to have work to do. Work can range from obedience to agility to sheep work, but they need training and attention.

They will initially alarm with barking, but will then jump excitedly at guests. Some may be shy, so early socialisation and a gentle but firm hand in training is necessary.

Grooming is a daily job with these dogs. If your Collie has a harsh coat, he will need a quick brushing every day but if he has a soft coat, you will spend a lot of time removing all the shedding hair.
