Artesian Hound Dog: Meet its Classic Characteristics

The Artesian Hound is also called the Artois Dog although its original name is Basset d’ Artois. It is characterised by being a very good hunting dog, having excellent physical build, good muscles, very strong and energetic.

Its head is large but at the same time short. Its ears are of great length and width, and have a certain flatness at eye level. The tail is very thick and when at rest has a sickle-like shape.

Its coat is silky, short, compact and of three colours which are white, dark beige and hare hair; and it has large spots.

Formerly this breed of dog was known under the name of the Picardy Dog, and was highly praised at that time, and its popularity increased with the passage of time to the point where it became renowned for its great ability to hunt hares.

Then this breed ceased to be completely pure as it began to be mixed with other breeds of dog, until the day that some people who were dedicated to breed dogs focused on carrying out selective breeding in such a way as to choose only dogs that had the classic characteristics of the breed of the Hound Artesian.

However, there came a point where the breed was even considered to be extinct, although there were still a few dogs that had managed to survive, and with the help of specialists in the field the breed was once again re-established.

The Artesian Hound has great versatility in terms of the work it can perform, as it is excellent for hunting hare, tracking or as a member of packs to hunt wild boar and roe deer. Frequent exercise is therefore essential.
